What is a rising sign? The meaning

Your rising sign, also called your ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth, as seen from the place you were born.

In astrology, your Sun sign says who you are, and your rising sign how you come across: the first impression, your vibe, what people see before they know you. “Leo with Scorpio rising” is someone born when the Sun was in Leo and Scorpio was rising.

Everyone born in the same month or so of the year shares a Sun sign; the rising sign changes every one to three hours. It’s why two people with the same star sign can be nothing alike. Together with your Sun and Moon signs it makes up your Big Three, the three signs people put in their bio: “☀️ Leo 🌙 Scorpio ⬆️ Virgo”.

How to calculate your rising sign

You need three things, and the third is the one people forget: your date, exact time and place of birth. The calculation then takes four steps:

1. convert the time of birth to universal time, using that day’s time zone and summer time;
2. work out local sidereal time from it, using the longitude of the place: in other words which way the sky was facing above the place of birth;
3. find the point of the zodiac rising in the east, using the latitude of the place and the tilt of the Earth’s axis;
4. read which sign that point falls in: that’s your rising sign.

The calculator at the top of this page does all four steps in a split second. For a rough idea without any maths: at sunrise, your rising sign is about the same as your Sun sign, and it moves on by one sign every two hours on average, much faster for Pisces and Aries.

Rising sign chart

This chart gives the rising sign in Dublin on the 15th of each month, every two hours, worked out by the same code as the calculator. Find your birth month, then the hour closest to yours.

Some signs skip a column: from Capricorn to Gemini they rise in under two hours and can fall between two columns; Pisces and Aries take less than an hour. Between two columns, or for a birth far from Dublin, your rising sign may be the one in the next box. Rising sign, Moon sign, descendant: what’s the difference?

• Your Sun sign, the one in the horoscopes, depends on the date: the Sun spends about a month in each sign.
• Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. It changes sign about every two days: the date is enough a little over half the time, otherwise you need the time. In astrology, it’s what you feel inside.
• “Moon rising” usually mixes up two different things: your Moon sign, or your rising sign. Both are worked out here.
• Your descendant is the sign opposite your rising sign, the one setting in the west at the same moment. No calculation needed: Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, Virgo and Pisces. In astrology, it’s what you look for in other people, in love and in friendship.

The twelve rising signs

What astrology gives each rising sign, in a few words: it’s the vibe, not the whole personality, which is down to the Sun and Moon.

Aries rising

Direct and spontaneous, they walk into a room the way you’d fling open a door: you notice their drive, and their impatience.

Taurus rising

Calm and grounded, they’re reassuring before they’ve said a word. They take their time making up their mind, and even longer changing it.

Gemini rising

Quick and curious, they ask questions, make you laugh and jump from one topic to the next. People think they’re flighty; mostly they’re fast.

Cancer rising

Gentle and reserved at first, they read the mood of a room before walking in. They look after their people before opening up.

Leo rising

Warm, with real presence, and they know it. You see them coming, and they like being seen.

Virgo rising

Low-key, precise and put-together, they watch before they speak. What they say is spot on, sometimes a bit too much.

Libra rising

Friendly and diplomatic, they put people at ease and care about getting things right. They look for common ground, even if it means dithering for ages.

Scorpio rising

Intense and magnetic, with a look that sizes you up, they don’t open up to just anyone. People find them mysterious; they’re careful.

Sagittarius rising

Open, honest and full of enthusiasm, they laugh loudly and talk about travel. They say what they think, sometimes before they’ve thought it.

Capricorn rising

Serious and composed, they inspire trust. They say Capricorn rising looks older when young, and younger with age.

Aquarius rising

Original and independent, they’re friendly with everyone and close to few. You notice them because they don’t do what everyone else does.

Pisces rising

Gentle, dreamy and a good listener, they pick up on other people’s emotions. They’re hard to pin down, and maybe that’s the point.

What if you don’t know your birth time?

You still get your Sun and Moon. If either changes sign on the day you were born, the calculator tells you roughly when, and which two signs are possible: “before or after 2.22pm?” is a question you can ask your mum.

Your rising sign can’t be guessed: without the time it could be any of the twelve, and a site that shows one anyway is picking at random. Birth certificates in Ireland, England and Wales don’t usually record the time (Scotland’s do), so ask family, or look in your red book or the hospital notes from your birth.

How accurate is this rising sign calculator?

As accurate as your birth time. On average the rising sign moves one degree every four minutes: when a birth falls close to the line between two signs, a time rounded to the nearest quarter of an hour can be enough to change it.

The positions of the Sun and Moon come from Jean Meeus’s formulas (Astronomical Algorithms), as apparent longitudes with aberration and nutation included: leave those out and the time the Sun changes sign would be a quarter of an hour off. The rising sign comes from local sidereal time, the latitude of the place and the tilt of the Earth’s axis.

It was checked against birth charts published by Astrodatabank whose time is rated AA, meaning it comes from the birth certificate. Albert Einstein: Sun in Pisces, Moon in Sagittarius, Cancer rising. Marilyn Monroe: Gemini, Aquarius, Leo. Steve Jobs: Pisces, Aries, Virgo. All three signs match.

Why two websites sometimes give different rising signs

Most often it’s the time: summer time forgotten, a time rounded off, or a birth right next to a change of sign, where five minutes can tip it. Here, local time is converted using the time zone and summer time in force on the day of birth, and the result shows the offset used so you can check it.

Sometimes it’s the zodiac. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses a sidereal zodiac, now shifted by about twenty-four degrees. This calculator uses the tropical zodiac, like Western apps. The house system (Placidus, equal houses…) doesn’t change the rising sign.
