Full description

The birthday of a 90s kid, played out on the screen of their handheld console: “PLAYER 1 — JAMES”, “LEVEL 30 unlocked!” between two little pictures — cake, trophy, heart, star or cartridge —, three skills with their bars (charisma 99, wisdom 42, sleep 12) and, right at the bottom, “Press START”. Around the screen, a console shell from another age: the cross, the two round buttons, the pills and the speaker grille. The screen is in four shades of green, and it’s what raises a smile instantly.

You type the first name and the age they’re turning, pick the shell — stone grey, lemon yellow, violet, mint or red — and the picture, keep our three skills or write your own, and roll the dice if inspiration runs short. A message underneath, if you like. The preview updates with every keystroke and shows exactly what gets printed. A birthday gift for a thirty- or fortysomething who kept their console in a drawer, a big brother, a boyfriend, a colleague, a son who loves gaming.

  • 250 g matte paper, pigment inks, printed to order.
  • Five sizes: A4, 30 × 40, 40 × 60, 50 × 70 and 70 × 100 cm.
  • Optional wooden frame on A4 and 30 × 40, black, white or natural.
  • Or the printable file: all five sizes, each as a PDF and a 300 dpi PNG, by download link.

How it works

  1. You type the first name and the age

The level is the age they’re turning: whatever you type is printed exactly as typed, from 1 to 120. Five console colours — stone grey, lemon yellow, violet, mint and red — and five pictures (cake, trophy, heart, star, cartridge) are chosen just below.

  2. You keep our skills, or write your own

Three skills, each with a bar from 0 to 99. Each one comes with a suggestion, the dice can swap it for another, and “Roll all three” fills them all at once. A message under the console, if you like.

  3. We print in Aveyron

To order, on 250 g matte paper: in our Aveyron workshop, whatever the size, and every poster is checked there before it ships. Or you receive the download link for the file by e-mail.

Frequently asked questions

What does the print show?

The screen of a 1990s handheld console: “PLAYER 1”, the first name in big letters, “LEVEL 30 unlocked!” with a little picture on each side of the number, three skills with their bars (charisma, wisdom, sleep…) and, right at the bottom, “Press START”. Around the screen, the console’s shell — the D-pad, the two buttons, the pill-shaped buttons, the speaker grille — and underneath, a message if you want one.

What’s a good birthday gift for a gamer or a retro gaming fan?

A print you can personalise in two minutes: a first name, the age they’re turning, three skills you can keep or rewrite. It speaks to anyone who grew up with a handheld console, and the screen is recognisable at a glance. The A4 is the lowest-priced printed size, which suits an office gift or one from a brother or sister.

Is it inspired by a real console?

It’s inspired by the handheld consoles of the 1990s, in its proportions and details: the four-shade green screen, the D-pad, the two round buttons, the pill-shaped buttons, the speaker grille. But the drawing is ours: the console is called “Pocket Player”, an invented name, and it uses no existing brand’s name or logo.

What can I personalise?

The first name (up to 18 characters), the level (the age they’re turning, from 1 to 120), the picture on each side of the level (cake, trophy, heart, star or cartridge), three skills with a name of up to 16 characters and a score from 0 to 99, an optional message of up to 40 characters under the console, and the shell colour: stone grey, lemon yellow, violet, mint or red. “Player 1”, “Unlocked!” and “Press START” don’t change.

Do I have to write the skills myself?

No: each one comes with a suggestion, the dice can swap it for another, and “Roll all three” fills them all at once. Everything can be rewritten, and what you have written is never replaced by a suggestion.

What does the level mean?

It’s the age they’re turning: you type it and it’s printed exactly as typed, with no calculation. If the birthday is a few weeks away, enter the age they’ll be turning, not their current age.

Which size should I pick?

The A4 or the 30 × 40 cm, the two sizes available framed, for a desk, a bedroom or a gaming corner. Larger sizes turn the console into a big wall poster for a living room or a gaming room.

Can I see the print before ordering?

Yes. The preview updates with every keystroke and shows exactly what gets printed: the first name, the level, the picture, the skills, the shell colour and the message.
