Full description

The maneki-neko, the Japanese lucky cat with its paws raised, in front of a large coloured disc. Above it, the occasion being celebrated (“For a new home”); on its belly, a wish in kanji — happiness, luck, prosperity, victory, bond, health, protection or long life; below, the name, the reading of the wish, a short line and, if you like, a place or a date. A double-ruled frame, and four styles: vermilion, indigo, sakura, matcha.

You choose the occasion — a new home, a new job, a shop opening, an exam or competition, a wedding or a couple, a recovery, a big journey, a retirement — and write the name: the rest comes ready-made, and you keep it or change it. A gift for a housewarming, a fresh start or a success, to hang rather than put away. The preview updates with every keystroke and shows exactly what gets printed.

  • 250 g matte paper, pigment inks, printed to order.
  • Five sizes: A4, 30 × 40, 40 × 60, 50 × 70 and 70 × 100 cm.
  • Optional wooden frame on A4 and 30 × 40, black, white or natural.
  • Or the printable file: all five sizes, each as a PDF and a 300 dpi PNG, by download link.

  • A white cat in front of a deep pink disc on a pale pink background, the kanji for bond on its belly; “Pour une histoire à deux”, “Clara & Malik” and “Ce qui relie deux cœurs vaut tous les trésors” in plum, shown in the French version

How it works

  1. You choose the occasion and write the name

Eight occasions: a new home, a new job, a shop opening, an exam or competition, a wedding or a couple, a recovery, a big journey, a retirement. Each one writes its line above the name and suggests the Japanese character that goes with it.

  2. You keep the wish and the line, or change them

Eight wishes in kanji: happiness, luck, prosperity, victory, bond, health, protection, long life. Each occasion comes with a line, and the dice can pick another. Four styles — vermilion, indigo, sakura, matcha — and a place or a date in small print, if you like.

  3. We print in Aveyron

To order, on 250 g matte paper: in our Aveyron workshop, whatever the size, and every poster is checked there before it ships. Or you receive the download link for the file by e-mail.

Frequently asked questions

What does the print show?

A maneki-neko, the Japanese lucky cat with its paws raised, in front of a large coloured disc. Above it, the occasion being celebrated (“For a new home”); on its belly, a wish in kanji; below, the name, the reading and meaning of the wish, a short line and, if you like, a place or a date. All inside a double-ruled frame.

What gift for a housewarming, a shop opening or a new job?

The maneki-neko is a Japanese lucky charm often placed at the entrance of a home or a shop to invite good fortune: it is a gift for a fresh start. This print is personalised for the moment being celebrated — new home, new job, shop opening, exam or competition, wedding or couple, recovery, big journey, retirement — and carries the names of the people and a line of text.

What does the character on the cat’s belly mean?

Eight wishes, eight Japanese characters: 福 (fuku) happiness, 運 (un) luck, 金 (kin) gold and prosperity, 勝 (katsu) victory, 縁 (en) the bond between two people, 健 (ken) health, 守 (mamori) protection, 寿 (kotobuki) long life. Each occasion suggests one, and you can choose another.

What can I personalise?

The occasion (eight to choose from), the name — first names, family or the name of a place, up to 28 characters —, the style (vermilion, indigo, sakura or matcha), the wish in kanji, a line of up to 56 characters and an optional place or date of up to 32 characters, in small print. The drawing of the cat doesn’t change.

Do I have to come up with the line myself?

No: each occasion comes with a line, six are suggested, and the dice can pick another. Everything can be rewritten, and what you have written is never replaced by a suggestion.

Does the colour of the cat mean anything?

In tradition, the colour of a maneki-neko is sometimes linked to a wish, but sources disagree, so we don’t tie it to any wish. The style is a matter of mood; the wish is the character on the belly.

Are the Japanese characters accurate?

Yes: they are eight everyday characters, traced from a free Japanese typeface (Noto Sans JP). It is printed lettering, not hand calligraphy.

Which size should I pick?

The A4 or the 30 × 40 cm, the two sizes available framed, for a hallway, a desk or a corner of the home. Larger sizes turn the cat into a big wall print that suits a living room.

Can I see the print before ordering?

Yes. The preview updates with every keystroke and shows exactly what gets printed: the occasion, the name, the style, the wish, the line and the place or date.
