Full description

How old are you on Mars? On Jupiter? Their age, in years of each of the eight planets: a year is the time a planet takes to go round the Sun, and each has its own. At 40 you are 166 Mercurian years old, 65 Venusian, 21.3 Martian and 3.4 Jovian — and not yet one on Neptune. The poster draws the eight planets, shaded, with the person’s age beside each one, and their Earth age very large in the middle.

Two worked-out facts complete the page: the Saturn return, one full orbit after birth (around 29 and a half), with its date — or “done” —, and the next round birthday on another planet, such as their 25th Martian year. A first name, a date of birth, the age being celebrated, and that is all: the days lived are counted from birth to the chosen birthday and divided by each planet’s orbital period (NASA). Four styles: midnight blue, white, sand, black.

  • 250 g matte paper, pigment inks, printed to order.
  • Five sizes: A4, 30 × 40, 40 × 60, 50 × 70 and 70 × 100 cm.
  • Optional wooden frame on the A4 and 30 × 40, black, white or natural.
  • Or the print-ready file: all five sizes, each as a PDF and a 300 dpi PNG, by download link.

How it works

  1. A first name, a date of birth

The age being celebrated fills itself in: it is the next birthday. Change it to give the print for a round birthday before the day.

  2. The style, a line of text

Midnight blue, white, sand or black, then a line in gold italics at the foot of the poster. It is optional.

  3. We print in Aveyron

To order, on 250 g matte paper: in our Aveyron workshop, whatever the size, and every poster is checked there before it ships. Or you receive the download link for the file by e-mail.

Frequently asked questions

What gift for someone who loves space, or who is turning a round age?

A “Your age across the solar system” poster: their age in years on each of the eight planets — at 40, that is 21.3 Martian years and 3.4 Jovian years —, their Earth age large in the middle, their Saturn return and their next round birthday on another planet. All it takes is a first name and a date of birth; it is made to order, and each round age (30, 40, 50) gives different numbers.

How old are you on Mars, Jupiter or Neptune?

You divide the days you have lived by the length of a year on that planet, meaning the time it takes to go round the Sun: 88 days for Mercury, 225 for Venus, 687 for Mars (nearly two Earth years), 4,333 for Jupiter (nearly twelve years), 10,759 for Saturn, 30,688 for Uranus (84 years) and 60,182 for Neptune (165 years). At 40, that makes 166 Mercurian years, 65 Venusian years, 21.3 Martian years, 3.4 Jovian years, 1.4 Saturnian years, 0.48 of a Uranian year and 0.24 of a Neptunian year.

How exactly is the age calculated?

Days are counted as calendar days, midnight to midnight, from the date of birth to the birthday you chose: neither the time nor the place of birth comes into it. The total is divided by the orbital period of each planet as published by NASA (the “Planetary Fact Sheet”). Ages are rounded to one decimal place, and to two below one year.

What does the Saturn return on the poster show?

Saturn takes 10,759 days, nearly 29 and a half years, to go round the Sun. The poster gives the date on which the person has lived that many days — one full trip round the Sun for Saturn — and their age that day, around 29 years and 5 months; it says “done” if that date falls before the birthday you chose, “still to come” if not. Astrologers date the Saturn return from the planet’s position as seen from Earth, which can differ by a few months: the poster gives the full orbit around the Sun, worked out from Saturn’s average period, not a birth chart.

What is the “next round birthday”?

It is the first moment after the chosen birthday when the person reaches a round number of years on another planet: 100, 200, 300… Mercurian years, 50, 100… Venusian years, 25, 50… Martian years, 5, 10… Jovian years, or Uranus’s first full orbit (84 years). The poster keeps the nearest in time, with its date and the Earth age they will be that day: at 40, that is 25 Martian years, at about 47.

Do you need the time and place of birth?

No: a first name, a date of birth and the age being celebrated are enough. Days are counted midnight to midnight, so the time would change nothing, and neither would the place.

Which age should I enter?

The age the person is celebrating. The page suggests the next birthday from the date, and you can change it: the poster counts days up to that birthday — the 40th-birthday poster up to the day they turn 40, even if ordered two months earlier. The age runs from 1 to 110, and the birth date cannot be before 1900.

Are the sizes and distances to scale? And Pluto?

No: the planets are drawn at symbolic sizes — Jupiter is still the biggest, Saturn keeps its rings — and their distances from the Sun play no part in the calculation. Pluto is not on it: the International Astronomical Union made it a dwarf planet in 2006, and the poster shows the eight planets.

What about someone born on 29 February?

In years that are not leap years, their birthday is counted on 28 February. The date of birth is written out in full on the poster.

Is what I see what I will receive?

Yes: the preview is built by the same editor as the print, and a “Check your poster” screen opens before the basket. The line at the bottom is printed exactly as written: you can change it or clear it.

Which sizes and frames?

A4, 30 × 40, 40 × 60, 50 × 70 and 70 × 100 cm: standard frame sizes, easy to find. Optional wooden frame on the A4 and 30 × 40, in black, white or natural, with acrylic glass; the larger sizes ship rolled, to frame at home.

What paper is the poster printed on?

250 g/m² satin matte paper, lightfast pigment inks. Printed to order in our workshop in Aveyron, whatever the size. Shipped rolled, in a sturdy long cardboard box; the A4 travels flat, in a stiff card envelope.

Can I get the file instead of the poster?

Yes. The print-ready file contains all five sizes, each as a PDF and as a 300 dpi PNG — ten files in all, by a download link sent after payment, to print wherever you like.

How long does it take?

Your poster is dispatched within 48 hours, then delivered in six to seven days to Ireland and the rest of the EU (four to five in France) — to your home or a pickup point, home delivery only for the 50 × 70 and 70 × 100. For a fixed date, allow ten days outside France. The download link for the print-ready file is sent as soon as payment is confirmed.
