What they left us
The Murphy Family Tree
Three generations of storytellers
The preview is exactly what gets printed. A first name is enough for each person; the line underneath — what they left us — is optional. The cards place themselves and stagger as the tree fills out.
A family tree with what no certificate records: a first name and, underneath, what that person left us. The founding couple, up to five children and three grandchildren each, an optional photo for each person. Four styles. 250 g matte paper, from A4 to 70 × 100 cm, or a printable file.
Step 4 of 4: Draw our tree title · style · names · lines
Each person can have a photo: a small circle above the first name, cropped square from the centre of the picture. Pick a face, close up and facing the camera. Without a photo, the card shows the first name only. Private photo, never published, deleted thirty days after dispatch (or after purchase, for the printable file).
No ideas? Ten prompts for the line under each name
- A dish you only eat properly at their house
- A laugh, a phrase, a word they kept repeating
- A gesture of the hands: sewing, planting, mending, rocking
- A smell of the kitchen, the garden or the workshop
- What everyone inherited from them: the eyes, the nose, the stubbornness
- A Sunday habit
- An object the family shared out
- A piece of advice that stuck
- A place they used to take us
- What we learned from them without their knowing

Full description
The family tree, with what no certificate records: under every first name, a line — what that person left us. “Gran Nora — her soda bread”, “Grandad Michael — his laugh on the stairs”, “Aoife — her mother’s hands”. The founding couple at the foot of the trunk, up to five children on the branches, up to three grandchildren at the end of each, twenty-two people at most. Each person can have a photo, a small circle above the first name. No dates or places to dig up: a first name is enough, the line is optional.
Four styles, four drawings: a botanical plate from an old treatise, a watercolour with soft leaves, a diagram at right angles, a constellation where every person is a star. The cards place themselves, and stagger as the tree fills out. The preview follows every keystroke and shows exactly what gets printed. The gift from grandchildren to their grandparents, from children to their parents, for a wedding anniversary, a Mother’s Day or a family Christmas.

- You pick the style, and photos if you like
Botanical, Watercolour, Diagram or Constellation; each person can have a portrait. The preview is what gets printed.
- We print in Aveyron

Frequently asked questions
What does the poster show?
A family tree: the founding couple at the foot of the trunk, the children on the branches, the grandchildren at the end of each. Every person is a card with their first name and, underneath, a line — what they left us: “her soda bread”, “his laugh on the stairs”. Each person can have a portrait in a small circle above their first name.
What is a good gift for grandparents, parents or a wedding anniversary?
A personalised family tree that doesn’t just say who is who, but what we keep from each person. Grandchildren give it to their grandparents, children to their parents; it also suits a wedding anniversary, a Mother’s Day or a family Christmas.
Why a line under each first name?
Because a tree that carries only names looks the same everywhere. The line says what the person passed on: a dish, a laugh, a gesture, a habit. It is optional and fits in 34 characters. There are no dates or places to dig up: a first name is enough.
How many people can I include?
Up to twenty-two: one or two first names at the root, one to five children and up to three grandchildren each. The cards place themselves and stagger across several heights as the tree fills out. A grandchild needs their parent to have a first name: otherwise the preview says so, and the order isn’t accepted.
Can I add photos?
Yes, it’s optional, one per person: a small circle above the first name, cropped square from the centre of the photo — a close-up of a face works best. Photos are private, never published, and deleted thirty days after dispatch (or after purchase for the printable file). With photos the cards are taller and the circles shrink as the tree grows: at twenty-two people they stay small.
How do the four styles differ?
By the drawing, not just the colours. Botanical and Watercolour draw curved branches and leaves; Diagram draws them at right angles, like an organisation chart; Constellation links stars with a gold line on midnight blue. The stars in the background aren’t a real sky: for the sky on a given date, see our star maps.
Is it a genealogist’s family tree?
No: it is a family tree to give as a gift, on three levels. It carries no dates, places or detailed family links — no spouses or half-siblings. To trace ancestors over centuries you need genealogy software; here you write what you keep.
Which size should I choose, and can I see the poster before ordering?
A4 or 30 × 40 cm, the two that come framed, for a tree of up to twenty-two cards that you read up close; 40 × 60 or 50 × 70 cm for a living room. The preview follows every keystroke and is exactly what gets printed: the title, the names, the lines, the style and the photos.
